Ebb and Flow Drain

Ebb and flow systems are the simplest hydroponic system that periodically fills a tray with a nutrient solution, submerges the root zone, and drains it back to a holding reservoir for a future feeding. The system is favoured by both commercial greenhouse growers as well as the hobbyists.

Advantages of Flood and Drain

• In this system, there is less risk for root diseases in a warm environment if the roots are only exposed to the nutrient solution periodically.

Disadvantages of Flood and Drain

• If the Ebb & Flow tables that can’t be full drain, this can bring problems say root diseases or excess algae growth. You have to make sure trays have a proper slope to fully eliminate the nutrient solution after each watering.
• The table above will not flood and the plants can be left without water for long periods of time, If the feeding pump fails or clogs.
